Doc
(aka OTTB Mount Defiance)
We were blessed to welcome Doc home to FAA in March 2020, just as the Covid pandemic was closing state lines. Doc was born on April 22, 2012 and is one of our “gentle giants” here at FAA. Doc was born with a deformity called “swayback”, which is characterized by a large dip in the spine of a horse, often resulting in a high wither and severe downwards curve to their topline. Because of this deformity, Doc’s racing career was short-lived and like far too many, he was on his way to a kill pen when he was rescued by our friends from The Race Fund.
At a whopping 17 hands tall, don’t let his size intimidate you - this handsome boy has the sweetest, most gentle demeanor and has quickly become a sanctuary favorite. He is typically the first horse to befriend all of the horses that have come home to FAA since his arrival. Doc shows our new rescues the ropes, is a faithful friend, and loves to have fun out in the pasture!
Doc loves to participate in therapy sessions, and enjoys grooming the other horses and our volunteers! He shows folks the importance of not judging by labeling appearances and not letting anger and fear get the best of you!
Fun Facts: Doc’s best friends are Sage and Trooper, and he shows us all the importance of being a great friend and companion to others. Doc loves salt licks and sticking his head into Sage’s stall window after meal time to lick Sage’s bowl clean. He receives PEMF treatment for his sore back and legs, in addition to helping ease his anxiety.
